Sudahkah Presiden Pas Ustaz Hadi Awang Menonton Video Lucah Anwar?

Beliaupun memperbanyak istighfar.

Tim Brown on More Perfect Typography

by:The FontFeed

After Stephen Coles’ and my own thoughts on web type last week, I thought I’d add this video which is highly recommended viewing. Tim Brown, Type Manager for Typekit, gave an inspiring presentation at the most recent edition of Build, held last November in Belfast. Entitled More Perfect Typography, it examines how to set text beautifully, mainly applied to web typography. Set aside half an hour and dive in.

At long last, designers can use real fonts on the web. But what now? Where do we go from here? Tim Brown has been studying type on the web for seven years, and has lots of ideas to share. In this talk, Tim will guide you through using typographic tools and perspectives that will change the way you design websites.

Typography is an ancient art and craft; we are merely its latest practitioners. By looking to our tradition for guidance,
we might once more attain our finest typographic achievements in this new medium.

Besides being Type Manager for Typekit, Tim Brown studies, promotes, and advances the craft of web typography on a daily basis, and shares what he knows at Nice Web Type. Tim has written for A List Apart, and he helps web designers with tools like Web Font Specimen.

Build is a small, yet perfectly formed, boutique design conference where interesting, talented web practitioners from all over the world come to share ideas, techniques and inspiration. Some are on stage; some are in the audience.

Type tidbit – The elegant humanist sans serif used for Tim’s slides is the classic FF Scala Sans.

Doyald Young Passes Away At Age 84 - fontfeed

On Monday, February 28, Doyald Young – lettering and logotype designer, type designer, author, teacher and mentor, passed away at the age of 84 due to complications following a recent heart operation. On the Art Center blog The Dotted Line Lorne Buchman, President of the Art Center College for Design in Pasadena, CA, where Young graduated with a degree in Advertising in 1955, testifies:
Doyald was a gifted artist, an astonishingly powerful teacher and well-deserving of the many accolades he received during his illustrious career. We honored Doyald at Art Center last December with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and we bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate of humane letters. The double entendre was not lost on the Art Center community. Indeed, Doyald, the great human being and the brilliant artist, infused in every exquisite font and letterform he created his immense and passionate humanity. We deeply mourn the passing of our dear and wonderful friend.

Doyald Young primarily designed custom lettering and logotypes, but also has a number of elegant and refined typefaces to his name:
Doyald Young was the author of a trio of monographs published by Delphi Press:
  • Logos & Letterforms
  • Fonts & Logos
  • Dangerous Curves: Mastering logotype Design
Read Doyald Young in his own words in Doyald Young: Master of Dangerous Curves, an interview by Allan Haley for Step Inside Design, July/August 2008; and the interview for Lettercult from September 25, 2008. And you can hear the man himself in the two videos below from Lynda.com.
From humble beginnings in a small Texas town eight decades ago comes legendary typographer, logotype designer, author, and teacher Doyald Young. As elegant as his script fonts and as wise as his set of Oxford English dictionaries, Young sets the standard for his craft. Friend and designer Stefan Bucher describes Young as “someone who could easily have done what he does in the Renaissance, and could easily do it 300 years from now.” In this installment of Creative Inspirations, we enjoy a window into the life of this accomplished artisan as he works with joyous focus in his favorite spot, his drawing table. We follow Young to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where he shares his talents with tomorrow’s designers. He recalls the hundreds of iterations he went through in creating the logo for Prudential, and he puts pencil to tissue creating the pages for his next book about script lettering, Learning Curves. Young’s story is compelling, captivating, and most of all, inspiring.

Hitler’s Poster Handbook

by: Steven Heller
The New Design Observer

On February 7, 2011, Steven Heller wrote a post for Design Observer entitled “The Master Race’s Graphic Masterpiece”. Below is a follow-up to that post.

Hitler’s fervent desire to attain propaganda supremacy among nations was a direct result of the German defeat in World War I and his belief that superior allied propaganda trumped Kaiser Wilhelm II’s meager output. Through intensive barrages of posters and other visual media, Britian and America effectively defamed the “Hun” in the eyes of the world, portraying the Kaiser’s military as callous blood-thirsty beasts. The German counterattack was tepid at best. “The Germans were sent into this mighty battle with not so much as a single slogan,” wrote Eugen Hadamovsky, the Nazi propaganda expert and Josef Goebbels’ deputy, in Propaganda and National Power (1933, reprinted by Arno Press in 1972). So when the Nazis came to power, Hitler commissioned a book titled Das Politische Plakat: Eine Psychologische Betrachtung by Erwin Schockel (Franz Eher Verlag, published in 1939), a psychological assesment of English, American, French, Russian and German political posters. It was a handbook for German propagandists and others.

Das Politische Plakat: Eine Psychologische Betrachtung (The Political Poster: A Psychological Review), by Erwin Schockel

Schockel stridently addressed questions of success and failure. The section on historical performance viewed posters through the long lens from ancient times to the rise of the Nazis, always comparing and contrasting national styles and vocabularies. A chapter on the language of war posters revealed the benign and malicious and the results of each. Schockel, who served in an art directorial role for the propaganda wing of the party, further discussed the application of future war missives, internal political developments, the role of posters in altering opinion, and how individual parties developed distinct signs and symbols. He ended the book with a critical comparison of good and bad posters. And as was de rigeur in Nazi handbooks, derision of Jews — in this case, Jewish graphic artists — was also cited.

Das Politische Plakat was one in a series of textbooks and manuals issued through the Reichspropagandaleitung, based in Munich (Reich Propaganda Office of the Nazi Party, a separate department from the more powerful Berlin-based Ministry of Propaganda and Enlightenment) for use by party members only. Schockel’s message was clear: powerful propagandistic graphics must be simple and memorable. He highlights one Nazi poster in particular. A 1932 election poster so minimalist that it could easily be confused with Modernist design, featured a black and white floating silhouette of Hitler’s face (just the head) against black. A rather hypnotic gaze — the forerunner of the ubiquitiouis “big brother” trope — was focused on the viewer. “Hitler” was set in white sans-serif capital letters, with only one typographical tic — a square over the “I” in the name (perhaps a visual pun on his famously cropped mustache).

“The calmness, goodness and strength that radiate from Hilter’s face communicate themselves to the observer,” wrote the sycophantic Schockel. “The impression it makes on people of unspoilt mind must be powerful.” Lastly, he notes “In addition, we had the poster printed on a black background which at the time served as an eyecatcher in the midst of the otherwise garish colors of advertising pillars.” After World War I nothing was left to chance.

An invaluable archive of Nazi propaganda artifacts and documents are available here at Calvin College.
