Skype Video Messaging Leaves Beta, Now Free

Now Skype users can leave video messages with contacts that are both online and offline.

Skype's Yasmin Khan said on Monday that Video Messaging is now emerging from its preview state and rolling out to customers using Skype for Windows desktop, Skype for Windows 8, Skype for Mac, Skype for iPhone, Skype for iPad, Skype for Android and Skype for BlackBerry. This new feature allows users to record and share a personal video message for free.

"Just like the millions of users around the world who have already previewed video messaging, you too can now record and share a personal video message, even when your friends and loved ones are not available," Khan said. "The best part is that they’ll be able to view your video message as soon as they sign into Skype. Skype Video Messaging is easy and convenient, and only the contact you’ve chosen to receive your message can view it."

Skype users can send and receive as many video messages as they want, and receive and view them on any platform or device running Skype. The surprising aspect is that this service is for free – at one point there was talk that only a certain number would be free, with additional messages costing a set price in single quantities or in bulk.

Sending a video message through Skype for Windows desktop isn't quite as obvious as sending an IM or video call. To leave a message, simply right-click on the contact's name, click on Send Video Message, and then record a video message up to three minutes long. These messages can be previewed by clicking the video window, and sent to both online and offline contacts by clicking on the envelope icon.

"To view the received video messages, first make sure you’re using the latest version of Skype for Windows desktop," Skype states in a Q&A. "The video message you’ve received appears in your Recent conversations. Simply click the video to play it in the conversation window. If you’re using an earlier version of Skype, you’ll receive a link and a code. To view the video message you’ve received, simply click the link and enter the code on the webpage that opens in your internet browser." For more information about Video Messaging, head here.
